Adding Integers with Number Line

The sign of a number tells direction on a number line. Positive numbers represent moves to the right and negative numbers represent moves to the left. To find 5 + (-3), start 5 places right of zero and move 3 places in the negative direction. The result is a distance 2 places right of zero, so 5 + (-3) = 2. To find (-5) + (-3), start 5 places left of zero and move 3 places in the negative direction. The result is 8 places left of zero, so (-5) + (-3) = (-8).
