Adding Integers with Two-Color Counters

A number and its opposite form a "zero pair" because their sum is zero. To add integers, create as many zero pairs as possible and then sum the remaining counters. To sum -5 + 3, place 5 negative counters and 3 positive counters. Next, combine opposites to make as many zero pairs as possible. There are 2 negative counters remaining, so -5 + 3 = -2.
