Multiplication can be thought of as the first number telling how much to make of the second number. So 3 × 4 can be thought of as making 3 rods that are 4 units long. The result is 12 units, so 3 × 4 = 12. Multiplying 3 × 4 can also be thought of as making a rectangle with 3 rows of 4. The rectangle has 12 cubes in total, so 3 × 4 = 12.
