Solving Equations with Algebra Tiles

To solve an equation like 3x + 2 = 8, model 3x + 2 on one side of an equals sign and 8 on the other. To isolate the variable x on one side, start by adding 2 negative unit tiles to both sides and removing zero pairs. To isolate x from the equation 3x = 6, divide each side into 3 rows and distribute the tiles equally. With an x isolated on each row, there are 2 positive tiles on each side opposite the variable. So x = 2 is a solution to the equation 3x + 2 = 8.
