Subtraction with Color Tiles

To subtract one number from another, like 8 – 5, place 8 tiles and then remove 5 of them. There are 3 tiles remaining, so 8 – 5 equals 3. Another way to model subtraction is to place 8 tiles of one color and then cover 5 of the tiles with a different color. There are 3 tiles uncovered, so 8 – 5 equals 3.
