A fraction is a number that names a part of a whole. If a dark-green rod represents a whole, notice that it takes 3 red rods to make a whole. Each red rod represents the fraction 1/3. The bottom number in a fraction is called the denominator and represents the number of equal-sized pieces in a whole. The top number is called the numerator and represents the number of parts being considered. So 2 red rods represent the fraction 2/3 and 3 red rods represents the fraction 3/3.
