Understanding Fractions with Fraction Circles

A fraction is a number that names a part of a whole. If a red circle represents a whole, notice that there are four yellow pieces in a whole. Each yellow piece represents the fraction 1/4. The bottom number in a fraction is called the denominator and represents the number of equal-sized pieces in a whole. The top number in a fraction is called the numerator and represents the number of parts being considered. So two yellow pieces represent the fraction 2/4, three yellow pieces represent the fraction 3/4, and 4 yellow pieces represent the fraction 4/4.
